It is only 30 years or so ago since Bertie Mee's greatest triumph. But the incredible success story of the former Arsenal manager, who died aged 82, seems simply impossible today.
How could one of Britain's major football clubs elevate a physiotherapist with little skill or interest in coaching to become their manager? And how could he then rouse the sleeping giant to arguably their greatest triumph the double? Mee's modest playing career, which took in Derby and Mansfield, was cut short by injury. After serving six years with the Royal Army Medical Corp, he joined Arsenal as a trainer/physiotherapist in 1960 under George Swindon.
